What is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand hair coloring technique where color is painted directly onto the hair rather than applied with foils. The word “balayage” comes from French and means “to sweep.”
Your colorist sweeps lighter tones through sections of your hair to create a soft, blended result that looks like natural sun-kissed highlights.
Because balayage is hand-painted, no two results are the same. Your colorist can customize the placement, tone, and intensity to match your hair type, skin tone, and personal style.
What Does Balayage Look Like?
Balayage creates a gradual transition from your natural color at the roots to lighter tones at the ends. Popular looks include:
Subtle balayage — a few shades lighter for a barely-there effect
Bold balayage — bigger contrast for a more dramatic result
Caramel balayage — warm golden tones on brunette hair
Ash balayage — cool, smoky tones on medium to dark hair

How Balayage Works at Numi Hair
Here’s what to expect during your appointment:
Consultation — Your colorist starts with a conversation about your goals, lifestyle, and hair history.
Color Application — Your colorist hand-paints lightener onto selected sections, fully customized to frame your face.
Processing — The color develops while you relax. Timing depends on your starting color.
Toning & Finishing — A glaze or toner refines the shade. A blowout finishes the look.
Most appointments take 2 to 3 hours, depending on hair length.
For a deeper look at the process, see our guide on how balayage works.
Who Is Balayage Best For?
Balayage works on almost every hair type, length, and color. It’s a great choice if you want:
- A natural, lived-in look with soft dimension
- Low-maintenance color that doesn’t need touch-ups every 4-6 weeks
- A softer alternative to full highlights or partial highlights
Pairs well with Olaplex or K18 for hair health during the process.
Balayage Shades and Variations at Numi Hair
Balayage is fully customizable, and the shade is what makes it yours. Our Westchester colorists hand-paint each look to suit your base color, skin tone, and the finish you want. Here are the balayage shades our Scarsdale clients ask for most.
Caramel Balayage
Warm, golden-brown ribbons that add richness and glow. A favorite for brunettes who want dimension without going blonde.
Honey Balayage
Soft, warm honey tones that brighten the hair with a natural, lit-from-within look. Flattering on light and medium browns.
Golden Balayage
Sun-kissed golden pieces for a bright, summery finish. Perfect for warming up cooler or ashy base colors.
Ash Balayage
Cool, smoky tones with no brassiness, for a modern, understated blend. Best for those who prefer cool over warm.
Blonde Balayage
Bright, seamless blonde painted through the mid-lengths and ends for a natural grow-out. From soft to bold, built for your base.
Brunette & Brown Balayage
Subtle lightening that keeps your depth while adding movement, so dark hair looks rich and dimensional, never flat.
Red & Copper Balayage
Warm copper and red tones hand-painted for a bold, dimensional finish that catches the light.
Strawberry Blonde Balayage
A soft blend of blonde and warm red for a delicate, rosy-gold result that suits fair and warm skin tones.
Popular Balayage Variations
- Partial Balayage: lightening focused on the top and around the face, a lower-cost way to add brightness where it shows most.
- Full Balayage: hand-painted throughout for all-over dimension and the biggest change.
- Money Piece Balayage: brighter pieces framing the face for a bold, face-lifting pop of color.
- Dimensional Balayage: lighter and deeper tones woven together for maximum depth and a natural, lived-in look.
- Balayage for Dark Hair: a gradual, careful lift that adds dimension to dark hair while protecting its condition.
- Balayage Touch-Up: a refresh of your tone and any grown-out pieces to keep color looking salon-fresh between full appointments.
Not sure which shade suits you? Our colorists will match the tone to your base color and skin tone in a consultation, so you leave with balayage that looks made for you.
Balayage vs Highlights vs Ombré
Balayage is one of several ways to add dimension to your color, and each technique gives a different result:
Many clients combine techniques, like balayage with face frame highlights for brightness around the face. To go deeper, see our pages on highlights and ombré, or our guide to balayage vs highlights.
Balayage Pricing
Balayage at Numi Hair starts at $300+. Final pricing depends on hair length, thickness, and how much lightening is needed.
Your appointment includes consultation, custom color application, toning, and finish.
We recommend adding an Olaplex treatment ($25+) or a K18 treatment ($20) to protect your hair during the process.
To maintain your balayage between visits, our team recommends professional products from Kerastase and Oribe.
