Double process color is a two-step service where your colorist first lightens your natural hair, then applies a new shade on top. It’s the go-to technique for going significantly lighter, creating bold fashion colors, or achieving tones your natural hair can’t reach in a single application. Every double process at Numi starts with a consultation to make sure the goal color is achievable and to plan the approach that keeps your hair healthy.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

1. Consultation

Your colorist evaluates your hair, discusses your goal color, and maps out the plan. For big color changes, we confirm whether the goal is achievable in one session or needs to be split across multiple appointments.

2. Lightening

A professional lightener is applied to lift your natural color to the level needed for the target shade. Processing time depends on your starting color and goal.

3. Rinse + Tone

After lifting, we rinse and apply a custom-formulated toner or color. This is where the final shade is created.

4. Repair + Style

A bond-building treatment like Olaplex or K18 restores strength to lightened hair. Finished with a blowout so you see the full result.

Most double-process appointments take 2 to 4 hours from start to finish. Add 20-30 minutes for a Glaze or booster treatment.

DOUBLE PROCESS OPTIONS

Permanent Double Process

The standard double process uses permanent color in both steps. Full lightening followed by a permanent deposit of the target shade. Lasts until new growth comes in, typically requiring a root touch-up every 4 to 8 weeks.

Fashion & Vivid Color

For clients going bold — platinum, silver, pastels, or vivid tones like rose, lavender, or blue. Requires significant lightening, which is why it’s always a double process. We’ll confirm at consultation whether your hair is healthy enough to handle the lift required.

Dark to Light Transformations

Going from brunette or black to blonde almost always requires a double process. Depending on how dark the starting point is and how light the goal is, this may need to be split across 2-3 appointments spaced a few weeks apart to protect the hair.

Corrective Double Process

When a previous color needs to be removed before the new color can be applied. Common for box dye fixes or when switching from a warm tone to a cool tone. If this sounds like your situation, color correction may be a better starting point.
